Shuzenji 修善寺

Shuzenji

We started the weekend in Atami for fireworks then headed to Shuzenji 修善寺, an onsen town known as little Kyoto with a nice little bamboo forest. The next day, we visited Kawazu Nanadaru Waterfalls 河津七滝, stopping by amazing outdoor hot spring pools by the waterfall where you can wear your swim suit.

Shuzenji temple Shuzenji is quite small and everything is within walking distance. In late August, Shuzenji Temple has candles lighting it up from 7:30 to 9 pm and a 30-minute Taiko drum performance from a local high school. It's a quiet town with not much to do other than wandering around the beautiful bamboo forest (also lit at night), walking along the river, and soaking your feet in foot hot springs - a quaint and peaceful place great for a relaxing getaway.

Since we didn't get a meals-included package at our ryokan, we had trouble finding a restaurant that served dinner as most seemed to be open only at lunch time even though many restaurants are listed on the guide. There is a convenience store next to the bus stop that opens until 10 pm.

Apparently, there is a bicycle amusement park 日本サイクルスポーツセンター a 20-minute bus ride away and back... didn't get around to going, but sure looks interesting!
